Laminate – Laminate counters are a good low-cost option and have a pretty easy installation process. However, laminate countertops are easier to damage than other counter-top materials. Cleaning is really easy with laminate as it does not require re-sealing and can easily be wiped down with a damp cloth.

While the surface of a butcher block countertop can easily become scratched, repairing this is usually pretty simple with some sanding and a refinish. If not properly sealed and installed, there is the potential for water damage, which can sometimes make this option unappealing.

Solid Surface – Solid surface is countertops are a man-made material, that is more cost-effective than natural stone but still better in quality than laminate. They are fairly stain resistant and able to take an impact, while still remaining easy to repair in comparison to natural stone options.

Granite – This is one of the most sought-after countertop materials due to the elegant finish it offers. It is also a fairly strong material selection, that is not easily damaged by heat. Once sealed, does not easily stain and is considered to be one of the more sanitary options. A disadvantage is that these counters do need to be resealed, however, they are definitely an item that adds resale value to your home.

It is also considered to be one of the most sanitary counter options, as it is a nonporous material. (meaning no holes throughout it to harbour liquids and bacteria).
